August 2018 Newsletter

Fries Avenue STEAM Academy

August, 2018

Dear Parents and Guardians:

We are off to a great start this year and look forward to another stellar year. Please join us in making this year a successful one by supporting your child in the following ways:

1 - Encourage your child to do his/her best

2 - Limit Television

3- Provide a quiet place for your child to study

4 - Set a consistent bed time for your child

5 - Communicate with your child’s teacher

Homework is an important part of your child’s instructional program.  Regular homework reinforces/expands skills and concepts taught by the teacher.  Homework also teaches your child responsibility, study skills, and good habits that are necessary now and throughout his/her school career. Please insist that your child completes his/her homework everyday, Monday through Thursday.  Each teacher has his/her own system for assigning, returning, and correcting assignments.  If you have questions, please send a note to the teacher.

It is essential that students in grades K-5 arrive by 7:55 a.m. each day.  Students who are tardy are missing valuable instructional minutes in language arts and math.  Also, daily attendance is important!  Please schedule appointments and vacations when students are not in school.  We will present trophies at the end of the year for students who come to school every day! Thank you for your help!

If students are absent from school, please send a note to the teacher.

To achieve our goal of each student becoming proficient or advanced in each standard, we need to work as a team.  As an important part of this team, we need parents to attend meetings regularly and volunteer at home and at school.    The following is a list of the meetings and parent group activities that are an important part of our Fries Avenue learning community:

  • ELAC – English Learners Advisory Council
  • SSC – School Site Council
  • LSLC – Local School Leadership Council
  • Health/Safety and Wellness Committee

What is Guided Reading?

Guided reading is a instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of readers. During the lesson, the teacher provides a text that students can read with support, coaching the learners as they use problem-solving strategies to read the text. The ultimate goal is independent reading.
